Growing Apples the Right Way

“The thing I enjoy most about being a grower is producing healthy fruit out of nothing more than sunlight, water and love”

Winner of the 2020 APAL Grower of the Year, Howard is the 4th Generation to run the operation at Hansen Tasmania. Since starting work in the business full time in 1994, together with father Carl and the rest of the Hansen Tasmania team, Howard has continued to develop new methods based on research, and continued to produce top quality apples and cherries.

THE BEGINNING

Howard Hansen’s great grandfather Carl began growing apples in Tasmania in the 1890’s at Nubeena on the Tasman Peninsula. In 1944, Howard’s grandfather Rupert relocated his family to the Huon Valley with the purchase of an existing apple orchard at Grove. Six decades later, the Huon Valley property is still the heart of the family business, home to the cool stores, packing facilities and offices

EXPANDING THE ORCHARD

In the 1980s, Carl Hansen expanded the family orchard, adding new apple varieties and implementing sustainable farming practices.
